Dexamethasone medication is a widespread drug from the class of glucocorticoids. The drug is used in all areas of medicine without exception. Its main purpose is the fight against shock states of the body, edema, inflammation and allergic reactions.
When the drug enters the body, it binds to special glucocorticosteroid receptors present in all tissues. Anti-shock effect of the drug is mainly due to its ability to stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. As a result, the pathological drop in pressure is replaced by its increase, and the physiological parameters of the body return to normal.
Also, the compound is able to
reduce vascular permeability,
suppress the production of inflammatory mediators - histamines and prostaglandins,
inhibit the release of cytokines,
reduce the activity of immune cells - lymphocytes, macrophages, and mast cells,
reduce the sensitivity of effector cells to inflammatory mediators,
prevent the appearance of connective tissue.
These properties of the drug can combat severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock and angioedema, to reduce pain and inflammation in rheumatic diseases. Dexamethasone pill and other medical forms affect all stages of the inflammatory process, increases the resistance of cell membranes to external influences. The drug increases the sensitivity of beta receptors located in the lower respiratory tract to sympathomimetics, which explains its therapeutic effect in obstructive respiratory diseases.
The drug is intended for intravenous, intramuscular, intra-articular, periarticular and retro-bulbar administration. In the acute period of the disease and at the beginning of treatment, the higher Dexamethasone dosage should be used.
When the effect is achieved, the dosage is reduced at intervals of several days until the maintenance dose is reached or until treatment is discontinued. Dosage regimen is individual. In severe cases and at the beginning of treatment, up to 10-15 mg of the drug per day is used, the maintenance dose may be 2-4.5 mg or more per day.
Symptoms of overdose include: high blood pressure peptic ulcer, swelling, high blood sugar disturbance of consciousness. The Dexamethasone side effects are manifested in metabolic disorders: water retention, sodium in the body, loss of potassium, alkalosis (increased blood pH), increased appetite, obesity.
